The U.S. CIGS Photovoltaic Roadmap

Mission

The U.S. CIGS PV roadmap effort will help the U.S. Industry to meet the U.S. SunShot Initiative goals of reducing An industry-led effort, with participation from all sectors of the photovoltaic industry the total installed cost of solar energy systems by 75%.  Roadmapping  will identify the critical challenges for CIGS PV manufacturing and applications and define the areas of innovation and technical developments needed to advance and sustain a competitive U.S. photovoltaic industry.

In 2013, PVMC released the first-ever U.S. CIGS PV Roadmap reports.

Goals

  • Produce a congruent plan for the U.S. CIGS PV industry community of manufacturers, suppliers, end users, and researchers
  • Identify the most critical module/cell and end-user challenges that can leverage pre-competitive and critical solutions for highest advantage and affordable broad-based implementation
  • Identify standards that are required for CIGS materials, equipment sets, and manufacturing environments and processes

Focus

The U.S. CIGS roadmap concentrates on the challenges and needs in thin film photovoltaic manufacturing. It is an industry-led effort, with participation from all sectors of the photovoltaic industry. These teams will focus their efforts on areas that industry leaders believe will bear the most benefit for the entire industry community: research, manufacturing, equipment and materials suppliers, product developers, and end-users.

Who we are

This roadmap has members from all sectors of the PV industry to form six roadmap working groups (RWGs) that correlate to our focus topics. Guidance and leadership are provided by the Roadmap Executive Steering Committee (RESC). The Photovoltaic Manufacturing Consortium, known as the PVMC, is the primary sponsor of the effort, providing resources for managing and coordinating the roadmap activities.

We are constantly looking for PV experts as contributors to the effort. If you wish to be part of this effort, please contact us and we will connect you with the team that best matches your expertise!

Membership Philosophy

A critical success factor in any roadmapping effort is broad inclusion of its members to ensure complimentary knowledge. In this way, considerations from all aspects of the industry add credibility to the discussions and dialog. The U.S. CIGS PV roadmap members represent all areas of the industry — module producers and integrators, suppliers for equipment, materials and metrology tools, end-users, and the research community.

The Roadmap Working Groups (RWGs)

These teams are the heart and soul of the roadmapping effort. Their knowledge is most valuable in determining the most critical challenges, and opportunities for innovation to enable the U.S. CIGS roadmap industry to achieve grid parity by reducing the cost per watt by 75% by 2020.

The RWGs are the authors of the various manufacturing roadmaps. Each team is comprised of experts to assess and project the technologies needed by a given timeframe to ensure success throughout the PV industry. Please contact us if you are interested in participating in this effort as a roadmap working group member.

The Roadmap Executive Steering Committee (RESC)

  • Provides leadership and guidance
  • Sets the roadmap timeframe and general topics
  • Defines roadmap policies and principles
  • Sets roadmap report guidelines
  • RESC members are roadmap champions within the industry

Three leading solar industry executives are directing the activities and decisions of the RESC and guiding roadmap working groups.
